This webpage gives information on the hybrid mint herb known as peppermint. Being a cross between spearmint and watermint, it is known in different ways to some such as Mentha x piperita in Latin term, as well as M. balsamea wild. Local to European countries and most of Asia, this plant is naturalized to North America.

There are numerous benefits with this herb discussed on the various pages of this website. You have to try it yourself and notice what benefits your body derives. Give yourself at least 3 days of continuous use to notice what benefits you can derive from this herb, or God forbid, side effects. In which case, you should stop using it immediately.

Peppermint Tea

Peppermint tea is made by using peppermint leaves (fresh or dry) and adding them to boiling water, and then straining into your drinking cup. Letting it cool before drinking is an option. Additional ingredients provide various other benefits. For example, add lemon or lime juice, honey, ice, etc. to your tea.

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil is made from peppermint leaves and can either be made at home or store bought in liquid or pill format.

There are many uses and benefits of this essential oil discussed in its own page.

How to Grow Peppermint

Here you will find information, tips, techniques, choices and ideas on how to grow your very own peppermint. Remember that this plant will re-grow each year so you only have to plant it once and you will gain benefits for years to come!

Choices:

Method 1:

You can grow peppermint in a container/pot. (Recommended) Make sure the container is deep enough.

Method 2:

You can plant it outside in your garden. Useful if you are out in your garden daily and can keep an eye on the plant regularly. However, it can take over your garden because peppermint grows fast! Still not recommended for beginners to plant outside as peppermint grows untamed in moist areas.

More choices:

The other choice you are presented with is using seeds, or cuttings.

I suggest cuttings but go with what is easily available to you.

Watering:

Peppermint is a very thirsty plant and requires ample water. Do not water so much that you develope other problems such as fungus. In other words, don’t over water and don’t under water. Just make sure that the soil remains moist so your plant can continue to grow.

It is easier done than read. You will have to try this out yourself, and with experience you will find it extremely easy to do.

Go out and plant in a container, you will absolutely love your peppermint plant!

Your plant can grow up to two to three feet tall. From July all the way through August, you can expect this plant to bloom, while sprouting little purple flowers in spirals and risky spikes. Fresh aromatic leaves will grow among white flowers. It’s wonderful; one can really enjoy the refreshing smell of this plant, and the benefits of peppermint even more!

Peppermint oil is one of the world’s oldest medicines used by natural healers to this very day! Simply because it works, and works fast in many cases! (Read more about peppermint oil uses here)

Contents of Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil consists of several vitamins and minerals as well as good fat such as:

Omega-3 fatty acid – Very good for skin and heart. Reduces depression and other mental issues as well. Huge benefits.

Vitamin A – Excellent for eyes, and a must if you sit on the computer on a regular basis.

Vitamin C – Reduces free racial damage, which studies show is linked strongly to diseases like cancer and other serious ailments such as arthritis and heart diseases.

Vital for bones as well.Calcium – Prevents osteoporosis and prevents breakdown of bones.

Magnesium – Used to help digest calcium among many other uses and benefits.

Manganese – Used by the body for many important functions.

Iron – Must for menstruating women, as iron depletes with blood loss.

Folate – Produces red blood cells and repairs tissue such as muscles.

Potassium – Regulates blood pressure (sodium/potassium balance), and heart functions. Relieves cramps if sodium/potassium is causing them to occur.

Copper – Imperative to stay away from copper deficiency, usually caused by having a high zinc intake.

Eventhough peppermint oil contains these beneficial ingredients, there is more you should know!

As peppermint herb is high in menthol, peppermint oil is high in menthone, among many other organic compounds. Peppermint oil also contains menthol but in lower amount than the peppermint plant. Menthone’s molecular formula is C10H18O, and as stated above, it is a naturally occurring organic compound found in peppermint oil. A ketone and monoterpene, menthone’s structure is similar to menthol but the major difference is in the secondary alcohol exactly where methone has a carbonyl.

How to make your very own peppermint oil!

This is by far the easiest method for making the oil at home that I have found. This is a blend and not pure peppermint oil, but the results are still fantastic!

What you will need to make your peppermint oil

Grown peppermint or peppermint leaves.

A container/jar to make the oil.

A container/jar to store peppermint oil after it has been made.

A strainer.

1/2 cup of olive oil.

Scissors.

Spoon or any tool used to crush peppermint.

Method of making your own peppermint oil blend

Grow the plant. If you need further assistance, go to (peppermint instructions page coming soon)

Harvest its leaves in the morning using scissors.

Store the leaves in the container you have chosen to make the oil in.

Crush the leaves using spoon/any tool. This will start to release the oils from the leaves.

Add olive oil to the container.

Shake the container after you have tightly sealed it.

Leave it outside.

If the weather is sunny outside or during the summer, leave it outside for

Two days.

Shake every 12 hours.

Otherwise:

Leave it outside for a month or 30 days.

Shake once a day.

I recommend you make this during the summer.

Once the time written above has expired (2-30 days depending on your choice), you can now strain the contents of the container into a new container/jar to have your peppermint oil.

That’s it, you are done! It is really that easy!
Enjoy your very own homemade peppermint oil!

Warning:
As with anything, do not overuse as it can cause toxicity. Avoid use if pregnant, have gallstones (due to discomfort in the intestinal area), or on an infant and children under the age of 3. Also, reactions with other medication can cause issues, so consult with your doctor if you are on prescribed medications.

There are many peppermint oil uses ranging from your health to the environment. On this particular page you will find many peppermint oil uses and benefits.

Peppermint Oil Uses — How to Use

Peppermint oil is taken in relatively small doses in liquid, pills (eccentric coated), or diluted with other oils such as olive oil and applied to skin. A few drops of it with a small amount of petroleum jelly can be applied to specific areas to reduce swelling in that area.

General Peppermint Oil Uses and Benefits:

Peppermint oil uses for the Hair:

Peppermint oil uses for the hair are very beneficial. Using it brings benefit to your hair by adding shine, fresh scent, and gloss.

It binds hair roots while increasing blood circulation, stimulating the hair follicles, which is very effective for hair growth. You must run your finger tips in a circular motion while gently massaging the oil into your scalp gently to loosen any form of substances that might be clogging your scalp.

Another one of peppermint oil uses for the hair is that it works as a conditioner. All these benefits combined can have a profound effect on your hair health.

Peppermint oil uses for the Scalp:

Peppemint tea uses for the scalp continues from, and ties in with the peppermint oil uses for the hair. This herbal oil is known to combat dandruff (by pH balancing), lice (due to it’s smell — discussed later as well), treating dry scalp, at the same time delivering cooling impact to the scalp.

Peppermint oil uses for Mouth:

Adding a few drops on tongue naturally eliminates bad breath. Very helpful following meals.

It has been found to help dental health as well.

Peppermint oil uses for Digestion:

Peppermint oil uses for digestion are well known by natural healers. Add a few drops into a glass of water, stir, and drink after meals to aid in digestion. Peppermint tea also helps with this. (Read more about peppermint tea benefits here) It helps getting rid of painful gases because of its carminative properties. The side effect sometimes experienced from this can be heartburn depending on the individual. The reason heartburn can occur is because after drinking this, you will have decreased lower esophageal pressure. It is not a must that you will experience this side effect, but we just wanted to let you know so you can be aware in advance in case heartburn does occur. You will only know after you try it, so go ahead and try.

Peppermint Oil Uses for Chronic Conditions:

Peppermint oil uses for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

It is used by people suffering from this because of its helpful effects on the aspects related to the belly, such as moving food throughout the gut, digestion, removing gas pains, causing relaxation in the muscles, etc. One of the elements of peppermint is menthol that seems to loosen up, unwind, and relax the muscles located all through the colon. This mechanism minimizes gut spasms.

Many studies were conducted regarding peppermint oil uses and benefits in reducing symptoms of IBS versus placebo. 75% of the patients had considerably reduced IBS symptoms! The bottom line is that peppermint oil works!

You can take an eccentric coated pill twice a day for at least four weeks, and also try peppermint tea if you wish.

Prostate Swelling:

Apply few drops of peppermint oil with petroleum jelly or Vaseline to the problematic area. You should notice a difference within an hour.

Peppermint Oil uses as Pest Control:

Peppermint Oil Uses against Spiders

One of the wonderful peppermint oil uses is to get rid of spiders from within the house. This makes peppermint oil uses multipurpose.

Spiders find the odor of peppermint unpleasant and repulsive. Spiders sense the scent through tiny receptor hairs on their front legs. A robust fragrance like peppermint oil is sufficient to send spiders darting in another direction, as far off from the over-bearing smell as they possibly can.

Method 1:

Wherever you find spiders concentrate indoors, place a small tray with cotton ball saturated with peppermint oil. The odor will continue to keep all of them absent. Try it!

Method 2:

Buy a spray bottle from the dollar store or however you want to get it.

Fill it up with about 90% tap water.

Add up to ten drops of peppermint oil.

Close the bottle with the spray nozzle.

Shake the bottle to mix water and peppermint oil to make your anti spider solution.

Open the lid and sniff to detect if the smell of peppermint is strong enough, if so, your spray is ready.

If not, add a few more drops of oil and re shake and sniff until you find the smell is strong.

Spray the mixture in areas where you know or suspect spiders can enter from such as corners, inside window, inside doorways, etc.

Peppermint Oil Uses against Mice, Rats, and Rodents

Just like in the case of spiders, the smell of peppermint oil is repulsive to rats, mice, and rodents.Saturate a cotton ball or pad with peppermint oil and place it in and around areas where mice can enter your house from such as doorways, heat vents, or any other location you might have in mind. Another tip is to grow peppermint plants in containers and place them near entrances.

Peppermint Oil Uses against Ants

Peppermint oil uses also includes getting rid of ants. Make a spray bottle like mentioned above and spray all around the outside of your house/entrances if you are in an apartment. This will repel ants from entering inside as long as they don’t have a bridge to go over the peppermint oil such as tree branches/bushes. Therefore, keep everything nicely trimmed outside your house to prevent them from entering above the peppermint oil sprayed area.

Warnings and Caution:

Keep your hands away from your eyes and do not let any oil come in contact with them. Immediately wipe your face with a washcloth or flush your eyes with water if you feel a burning sensation in or around your eyes or if your eyes start to get watery during or after peppermint oil usage. Careful not to apply it somewhere your pet may ingest it, if you own one. Also, avoid using peppermint oil directly on furniture/walls/wood because it can stain. Stay with the guidelines mentioned above instead.

We hope these peppermint oil uses have helped you and benefited you in many ways. As we find more peppermint oil uses, we will add them to this page!

There are various Peppermint tea benefits from a herbal, organic, or healer’s perspective. Peppermint tea benefits can provide prevention and healing towards many different ailments, as mentioned below.

Common Ailments

Stuffy nose

Among the many peppermint tea benefits, the common one has been the cure to stuffy noses. This improves breathing, which means improved oxygen for the cells. This is one of the great Peppermint tea benefits to the internal well being of the drinker, as oxygen is the most important nutrient for our body, without which we cannot live. Arnold Schwarzenegger has been known to talk about inhaling pure oxygen from oxygen tanks during his workouts, back when he competed for Mr. Olympia. Drinking this is imperative if you suffer from blocked nose or have difficulty breathing.

Dry Throat

Another one of Peppermint tea benefits is that it can also heal and prevent dry throat for singers, teachers, actors, speakers, and anyone who uses their voice a bunch on a regular basis, but the little known trick is to add some honey to the peppermint tea, because the honey will coat your throat and keep it moisturized. This is one of my favorite peppermint tea benefits as not only does it help the throat but it also tastes good with the addition of honey!

Bad Breath

Peppermint tea benefits the mouth by giving fresh breath and eliminating bad breath, because of its minty flavor, just as chewing gum would. Peppermint tea benefits the body more so it should be used instead, whenever possible.

Hair Shampoo

Peppermint tea benefits the hair and scalp by giving it shine, fresh scent, vibrancy and great condition.

Peppermint Tea benefits Indigestion

Peppermint tea benefits digestion, which in turn lowers the gas accumulation in the intestines. Various other ailments regarding this area, such as irritable bowel syndrome have been known to be cured by peppermint tea benefits. More information can be found at the research conducted at the University of Maryland.

Common Cold

Peppermint tea benefits anyone suffering from a common cold. The real reason behind why peppermint tea benefits a person suffering from common colds and works well is because of its natural alkalinity. To have the maximum peppermint tea benefits, add lemon/lime to your cup, and lots of it. Drink a lot of lemon and water throughout the day. Even without this herb, just drink lemon with water, and you will feel amazing results.

Vomiting, Diarrhea

The feeling of vomiting, and diarrhea, can be alleviated, as this herbal drink will freshen you from the inside out. This will not always cure these feelings if they are related to some serious illnesses, and in that case, you should seek medical attention. But, in circumstances where you just feel nauseous, this tea can definitely help you. Again, squeeze lemon juice to ensure maximum peppermint tea benefits.

Unwanted Body Hair

It has been noted that peppermint tea benefits women by helping remove, or decrease the amount of unwanted body hair from facial area by lowering androgen. A quantity of five cups a day in needed, though, and may not be advisable to all people.

Peppermint Tea Benefits on the Mind and Emotions

Peppermint tea beneits the mind, mental, and emotional well being of the drinker, by causing relaxation, comfort, freshness, and overall feeling of vibrancy.

Peppermint tea benefits by causing emotional well being and this can save you hours of frustration, anger, distress, pain over the past, regret, and all sorts of negative feelings by making you relax, freshen up, and to just take it easy.

Its relaxing power is known to those who drink it. You will find people who drink this delicious, wonderful, fresh herbal drink on a regular basis are full of happiness, energy, and joy. By drinking regularly, we can bring about a good sense of well being in our mind and body: a soothing calm relaxation.

Mind and body are linked, and by drinking this on a regular routine, we can get the best of both worlds. Drinking peppermint tea will bring harmony to ourselves, and to all those around us. Make a cup of for yourself, because you deserve it. And then, please do share this delicious and wonderful secret knowledge about peppermint tea benefits with all those you love.

Bring peppermint tea benefits into your life, and you will be bringing love, joy, happiness, relaxation, and good emotions to yourself, and those you love.

Fresh Whole Leaf

This peppermint tea version is made by inserting whole peppermint leaves into the boiling water to prepare the peppermint tea. It is very fresh tasting, and very minty compared to the dry version of peppermint tea. If you are not satisfied with dried peppermint tea, then try this whole leaf version, before quitting on this delicious organic peppermint tea idea altogether.

Bagged

Store bought peppermint tea is convenient to make and use when you don’t have time to make one yourself. Otherwise, you can grow your own, and make it yourself. Peppermint spreads rather quickly so make sure you either plant it in a pot, container, bowl or somewhere it will not cause you problems with its rapid growth.

Custom

Peppermint tea can be made custom, depending on your taste preferences, by adding other ingredients and temperature manipulation methods.

You can add other ingredients suchas honey, cream, milk, and even powdered almonds. I believe you should avoid sugar, and instead use honey.

It is possible to enjoy peppermint tea hot, medium, or cold. It is another way to customize your drink. By adding peppermint tea to the fridge or adding ice cubes in hot weather you will make a more refreshing cool brew. Room temperature is also a viable option for some. It all depends on your tastes and what you prefer.

Conduct peppermint tea experiments to find out your personal preferences on how you like to customize your very own version. Try dried, fresh, bagged, or home grown.

How to Make Peppermint Tea

Growing and Preparing Peppermint

To make your very own peppermint tea, the first step is to grow peppermint leaves in your backyard if you have one, or in a container (bowl, pot, etc). It is best to use a container, because this herb grows very quickly and can take over your garden if you are heedless. You can also choose to simply purchase peppermint from the store if you prefer.

You can grow peppermint using a peppermint cutting and inserting it halfway inside the soil of your container. Alternatively, you can use seeds. Make sure it gets sunlight and is watered enough. Just make sure the soil isn’t dry, or soggy. You will be surprised how quickly it grows and spreads. Too much water can cause problems like fungus.

Drying Peppermint

Depending on your preferences, you may wish to dry these leaves or keep them fresh for your tea.

To dry the leaves, simply wash them in cold water, and air dry by using a fan, hang them upside down, and then store in an air tight container, away from light. The leaves must be 100% dry before you store them, or they will accumulate mold, and that is very bad for health, and exactly what we want to avoid.

Personal Note on Drying Peppermint Tea leaves

I personally do not recommend drying the leaves to make peppermint tea with, because the oil in the leaves is very beneficial. The oil is used for many remedies and even sold separately, so therefore use fresh leaves that contain the oil so you can gain maximum benefits towards your health and well being.

Please browse the website for more information regarding the various peppermint tea benefits that I have mentioned for you.

Preparing your Peppermint Tea and Customizing it

Second step is to make the peppermint tea from the leaves you harvested. Start by boiling water, and then place the leaves inside. You can add other ingredients in here if you wish, such as other herbs or condiments, depending on your preferences.

Customize your tea by adding lemon, cream, milk, etc. as mentioned and stated earlier. Also make it the desired temperature (by storing it in the fridge, room temperature, etc), and drink peppermint tea!

So you start by growing this herb in a container, harvesting the leaves in the morning, making the tea, customizing it, and then finally enjoying your very own delicious homemade custom peppermint tea!
